Tara canyon
The Tara River Canyon in northern Montenegro is one of the deepest river gorges in Europe, plunging as much as around 1,300 m below its rim. The canyon lies largely within Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site famed for its dramatic peaks, dense forests, glacial lakes, and wild river landscapes. The Tara River itself is renowned for its crystal-clear, icy waters and rich biodiversity, making the canyon not only a breathtaking natural spectacle but also a playground for outdoor lovers.
At the heart of the canyon experience is the iconic Đurđevića Tara Bridge — a graceful concrete arch of the middle of the 20th century. It offers stunning views of the river far below. Piva canyon
Piva Canyon is one of Montenegro’s most impressive natural landmarks. Located in Piva Nature Park near the town of Plužine, the canyon was carved by the emerald-green Piva River and is surrounded by towering limestone cliffs. At its southern end stands the 220-meter-high Mratinje Dam, which created the beautiful Piva Lake, one of the country’s most scenic lakes and a defining feature of the landscape.
Piva Canyon is a great destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Drive along the spectacular canyon road with its numerous tunnels and viewpoints, stop to admire the breathtaking scenery, or explore the crystal-clear waters of Piva Lake by kayak, boat, or paddleboard. Morača canyon
The Morača River is one of Montenegro’s most important rivers. The river flows from north to south for about 100 kilometers before reaching Lake Skadar, the largest lake in the Balkans. Along its course, it has carved a dramatic limestone canyon, where cliffs rise to 1,000 meters above the emerald-green water.
The Morača Canyon is one of the most impressive natural landscapes in Montenegro. Its steep rock walls, narrow gorges, and untouched forests create a wild atmosphere. The canyon is home to diverse plant and animal life and offers a striking contrast between bare limestone cliffs and the vibrant colors of the river below.
Following the canyon is the historic road between Podgorica and Kolašin, long regarded as one of the country’s most scenic drives. Before the construction of the modern motorway (A1 Princess Xenia), this route was the main connection between southern and northern Montenegro. The road passes through dozens of tunnels cut directly into the rock, offering breathtaking views around every corner.
There are many viewpoints where you can stop and enjoy the canyon scenery. Highlights include a pedestrian suspension bridge spanning the river deep within the gorge and the medieval Morača Monastery, one of Montenegro’s most important cultural and spiritual landmarks.
Cijevna canyon
The Cijevna River is a clear, emerald-green river that begins high in the Prokletije Mountains and flows southwest into the Morača River just near Podgorica. It cuts through striking karst terrain, forming the Cijevna Canyon. At some points, the canyon walls rise steeply, creating narrow passages where the river rushes through tight rock walls.
Here lies a 10-meter waterfall often called “Niagara” or the Niagara Waterfall of Montenegro. Cijevna Canyon and its “Niagara” waterfall offer a perfect natural escape close to Montenegro’s capital.
Mrtvica canyon
The Mrtvica River Canyon is one of Montenegro’s hidden natural gems, located between the mountains of central Montenegro. Although much smaller than the Morača Canyon, it is famous for its crystal-clear water, forests, and peaceful atmosphere. Over thousands of years, the river has carved a narrow canyon with cliffs, rocky passages, and small waterfalls before flowing into the Morača River.
The canyon is best explored on foot along a scenic trail that follows the river through untouched nature. The combination of emerald water, dense woodland, and impressive rock formations makes the Mrtvica Canyon one of the most beautiful hiking destinations in Montenegro.
Nevidio canyon
Nevidio Canyon is one of the most impressive natural attractions in Montenegro, located near the small town of Šavnik on the Komarnica River. Its name, Nevidio, means “Unseen”, because this narrow gorge was long considered inaccessible and hidden from view. You will appreciate how hidden it is while approaching it. It is also famous for being the last canyon in Europe to be successfully explored, which only happened in 1965.
Today, Nevidio is best known as Montenegro’s top canyoning destination. Visitors can join guided tours that involve swimming through narrow rock passages, climbing over boulders, sliding through waterfalls, and jumping into crystal-clear pools. It’s an exciting but physically demanding adventure that requires a guide and proper equipment. For those who prefer a calmer experience, the surrounding area near Šavnik offers peaceful mountain scenery and hiking opportunities in the Komarnica valley.
Waterfall Skakavac is located very close to Nevidio canyon. Quite impressive in spring, it is usually 100% dry in summer.
