Tivat is a coastal town located in the Bay of Kotor near the mount Vrmac. It has a long history which include Greek and Roman settlements as well as being under Venetian power. After that, Austrian empire discovered the convenience of this location for maritime purposes, an arsenal was built here which was later used by Italian and Yugoslavian armies.
Tivat Airport located in 3 km from town centre is one of the two international airports in Montenegro and is convenient for travellers arriving to the Adriatic coast and the Bay of Kotor. Tivat airport is in the top 10 airports of all Balkan region by its traffic.
Nowadays, Tivat is most known by Porto Montenegro. A large luxurious marina working from 2010 reminds a little town where yacht owners can find everything they can imagine. It includes marina and yacht club, a lot of shops (mostly quite expensive especially if you are not a yacht owner yet) and restaurants. Also Porto Montenegro often holds different cultural and sport events.
If you want to remember less luxurious pages of history, it’s good to visit the Maritime Heritage Museum which is located just near the promenade of Porto Montenegro. The collections of the Maritime Heritage Museum include ship models, photographs, cannons, etc. Near the entrance you’ll see two Yugoslavian submarines: Heroj P-821 and smaller Una P-912. The visitors are allowed to go inside Heroj P-821 submarine. The cost of entrance to museum+submarine is 5 euros, to museum only is 2 euros.
Pine Embankment is a lovely walking place not far from Porto Montenegro. It is nice clean promenade with many cafes where you can enjoy the Bay of Kotor views. Pine Embankment is especially good during evening hours.
Veliki Gradski Park (Large Town Park) can become your retreat both from luxury of Porto Montenegro and from summer hot days. Located near the centre of Tivat, it is an old botanical garden established in 1892. Now it is protected as a nature monument and well maintained. Trees in the park represent about 150 species including different kinds of pines, palm trees, eucalyptus. There is a memorial to heroes of the World War II in the park.
The centre of Tivat is quite nice to walk along, too. It is very green, there are a lot of magnolias and palm trees around it.
There are several beaches in and around Tivat. Probably, the most known is Plavi Horizonti beach.
