Petrovac – Family-Friendly Seaside Resort with Rich History

Petrovac view

Petrovac (or Petrovac na Moru) is a small green town on the Adriatic coast situated between Budva and Bar in Montenegro. Very quiet in winter, it is usually full of tourists during the summer season.

Petrovac beach

Petrovac has a very long beach (and several more in its surroundings), and it is suitable for a family vacation with children.

Petrovac embankment

Petrovac embankment is green, charming, and full of cafes and other attractions.

Fortress Castello in Petrovac

At the end of the embankment, near Petrovac harbour, you will see a Venetian fortress from the 16th century. It is known as Fortress Castello (Castio) or Kastel Lastva. The fortress is one of the most recognizable symbols of Petrovac.

Petrovac two islands

In front of the Petrovac embankment and beach, you will see two islands: Katič and Sveta Nedelja. It is possible to visit them on a boat or kayak. Many boat tours are suggested along the embankment.

St. Elijah Church

The Church of St. Elijah is a small church situated near the Petrovac embankment, and it is one of the oldest religious buildings in the area. It dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries. Its architecture is very typical of churches in Montenegro. Surrounded by various kinds of trees, it is a nice and peaceful spot for reflection.

Roman mosaics in Petrovac

Near St. Elijah Church, there’s a small Roman mosaic site set into the remains of a late-Roman villa, probably dating from the 3rd–4th century AD. The remains include sections of mosaic floor uncovered more than a century ago.

These mosaics are historically interesting as evidence of ancient Roman presence in the area, but they’re quite small and not elaborately displayed compared with larger archaeological sites.

If you’re genuinely interested in Roman mosaics, a much more impressive alternative is to visit the Roman mosaics in Risan (in the Bay of Kotor area). There, you can find a unique depiction of the Greek god Hypnos.

Hiking trail near Petrovac

Petrovac is surrounded by pine forests, and one of the best ways to enjoy the forests and the Adriatic Sea is to go along the hiking trail Petrovac – Reževići. It is 3 km long and starts near the end of the Petrovac embankment (ends near Reževići monastery, which is open and free for visitors). It is a comfortable trail, with no extreme ups and downs, so everybody can enjoy its picturesque views. On your way, you’ll find a nice beach and a large abandoned Yugoslavian hotel.

Lučice beach, near Petrovac

On the other side of Petrovac (near the local football stadium), you can find a hidden gem – a small beach called Lučice. Much smaller than the main Petrovac beach, it is still very comfortable and picturesque.

Besides swimming and beach rest, Lučice is a notable point for hiking. Several hiking trails start here and go to Buljarica. One of the trails is paved and the easiest, while the others go through the forest with viewpoints overlooking the sea.
