Language and useful phrases

Montenegrin language is a South Slavic language accepted in Montenegro as a state language. It is a close relative of Serbian, Croatian, and Bosnian languages.

Of course, nobody expects that you learn it for your trip to Montenegro (if you are not from the Balkan region) and in most of tourist places locals speak English well enough (sometimes, you can find someone speaking French or German as well). Nevertheless, it can be useful to know at least some phrases to start a conversation and to show respect for local culture.

Here are top 10 phrases that can be useful for you while you are staying in Montenegro (you can paste them into Google Translate to listen to them):

Dobar dan – Hello (though its exact meaning is “Good afternoon”, it can be addressed to unknown or little-known people at any time of the day or night)

Zdravo / ćao – both words can mean “hi” or “bye” depending on the context (you can read “ć” as English “ch”)

Doviđenja – Goodbye (quite formal, as for pronunciation “đ” is like “dj” in English)

Hvala – Thanks

Molim – Please

Govorite li engleski? – Do you speak English? (Very useful phrase, even if the person doesn’t speak English, they will find someone who does)

Koliko košta? – How much does it cost? (you can read “š” as English “sh”)

Da – Yes

Ne – No

Izvinite – Excuse me
